Between 1956 and 1972,i.e. 16 years, the analog tape recorder has grown up from 1 to 48 tracks (using 2x24 trks running in sync)
The first digital multitrack appeared in 1981.It was the 3M DMS system,32 & 4 tracks. Then came the MITSUBISHI X850 32 trks in the ProDigi format, and his brother the OTARI DTR 900,then the SONY PCM 3324 24 trks using the DASH format in 1983,then the SONY PCM 3348,48 trks,in 1988 .All these were 16 bits up to the SONY 3348HR,48 trks in 24bits born in 1992.
Everything stay quiet up to 1996 when the DIGIDESIGN ProTools DAW
started to fill the studios. When DIGIDESIGN announced the ProTools HD in 2003 , SONY announced the end of life of the complete digital line of equipment , tape recorders, digital desks and so.
ProTools continued to spread up fastly and becomes the mondial standard in 2007 when QUANTEGY stops the manufacturing of magnetic tape...the end of an era.
If we listen back today to the best albums produced with these technologies,we feel a little guilty to use the very easy to use equipment we have today.
All these pioneers were genius who had the complete know-how of their equipment.
Let's try not to forget it....
